Cedar Key - Recap

4/21/2015

What a fantastic morning.!!!! Birds, birds, birds and more birds. Many species of  Herons, Egrets, Gulls, Terns, Doves,Woodpeckers, Eastern & Gray Kingbirds, Vireos, Purple Martins, Swallows,13 species of Warbler including
Black-throated Green, Prairie, , Blackpoll, Chestnut-sided, Cerulean, Tennessee, Northern Waterthrush, Summer & Scarlet Tanagers, Blue & Red-breasted Grosbeaks, Baltimore Oriole, Buntings and more. Did we have birds?  Well, yes we did. The Great Horned Owl  chicks along with a parent posed for our cameras. We even heard a Chuck-Wills-Widow calling. Total species for the group of twenty participants was a whopping 90..  The entire list can be seen on this ebird link.

Just a quick edit to Fred's post above. We had such a large group that we split off several times, and thus some of us saw birds that others didn't, even when we were all in the same spot! After combining the checklists, we ended the day with a WHOPPING 101 Species, which is the highest count we have had on a field trip since we started using eBird to track them, and a total of 18 Warbler species! The combined checklist can be see at this LINK. What an amazing day birding!

Orlando Wetlands/Merritt Island Recap

2/5/2015

Citrus County Audubon members were out in full force for these two days!  I was greatly amazed at the number.  This might be the most from CCAS to attend this one.  Twenty-one participants enjoyed great weather and splendid birding. We had other members from Hernando Audubon joining in. The highlights from Orlando Wetlands had to be the male Vermilion Flycatcher and of course the Groove-billed Ani spotted by Jim Meyer.  Jim got photos of which I will be sharing when he forwards them to me.  We had 50 species at this location.
Wednesday morning found all of us at the causeway at Merritt Island.  There were many highlights from this day with the Scrub Jays at the park entrance to the Northern Gannets at the Canaveral National Seashore with the ending Great-horned Owl on Playalinda Beach Rd.  The list from Merritt Island is at this link. The list from Orlando Wetlands is at this link.
Some of us enjoyed watching a pair of Crested Caracara from our motel balcony as they gathered materials to build nests.
Two great days of birding and still got out before the rains came.
